An old retailers stock from Rijssen

Gedachten rond een restvoorraad pijpen uit Rijssen

By Don Duco

Abstract:: In the small Dutch town Rijssen in Twente a box containing pipe bowls and pipe paraphernalia was recently found back. The material dates from about 1890 and it concerns the overstock of a local pipe dealer. The content of the box illustrates the taste for pipes in a smaller Dutch town in that period. The majority of the material is meant for farmers and smokers living in the country, some other items are more luxurious and based on the taste of citizens. The total reflects the decline of the clay pipe in favor of porcelains and early wooden pipes, most of them based on the fashion initiated in Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century. The article discusses the material in the light of the local taste of that period.
