Thoughts on a unusual pipe find

Abstract: This article describes the find of 183 clay tobacco pipes at the Doelengracht near Rapenburg in Leiden. The material dates between 1655 and 1680 and is mainly of Gouda origin. However, some better quality local products were found as well. A rare item is the find is a complete crummhorn pipe, that is not known from any other site in the Netherlands. The article describes the pipes and places them in their time of use, moreover it tries to explain the meaning of this group and their original users.
